Are MayDay Games 63.5x88mm Card Sleeves Worth It in 2026? A Fit-First Verdict
Yes for standard-size board game cards: MayDay's Premium 63.5x88mm sleeve is 90-micron, crystal clear, acid-free and PVC-free. Check the publisher's card size first, because Wingspan's bird cards need MayDay's narrower Chimera sleeve instead.

Are MayDay Games 63.5x88mm card sleeves worth it in 2026?
Yes, if your game's cards measure 63.5 x 88 mm and you want card fronts and backs to stay readable: MayDay's Premium version (SKU 7077) is a crystal-clear, 90-micron polypropylene sleeve, acid-free and PVC-free, and MayDay lists it for Pandemic, Terraforming Mars, Ark Nova, Gloomhaven and Bomb Busters. Skip it for games whose cards are another size, such as Wingspan's bird cards, and for trading-card decks where you want a matte, opaque back.
The verdict rests on MayDay's own product pages, the card sizes Stonemaier Games prints for its games and Dragon Shield's size guide, and it reflects that published material rather than first-hand use.
What the bundle is
The listing behind our link is a bundle of four MayDay Premium packs in the 63.5 x 88 mm size. On its own store, MayDay sells this sleeve at two protection levels under one product page, "Card Game Card Sleeves (63.5x88mm) (Premium 7077 or Standard 7041)": the Standard comes 100 sleeves to a pack and the Premium comes 50 to a pack. MayDay labels the choice "Protection Level", and the Premium is the level the bundle contains.
| Spec (MayDay's page, checked October 2026) | MayDay Premium 63.5x88mm |
|---|---|
| Cut for cards measuring | 63.5 x 88 mm |
| Outside size | 66 x 91 mm, as MayDay states it |
| Thickness | 90 micron |
| Material | 100% polypropylene, acid-free and PVC-free |
| Finish | crystal clear; MayDay says it shows art "without haze" |
| Sleeves per pack | 50 (the Standard pack holds 100) |
| MayDay SKU | 7077 (Standard: 7041) |

One gap worth knowing: MayDay's page gives the Premium's thickness but not the Standard's. If you are choosing between the two levels, the Premium is the one whose spec you can actually check. MayDay credits that 90 micron thickness with "enhanced durability, firm handling, and smooth shuffling for frequent players and collectors."
Which games take 63.5 x 88 mm cards
MayDay's page names Magic: The Gathering, Terraforming Mars, Brass: Birmingham, Ark Nova, Pandemic, Gloomhaven and Bomb Busters, and its "popular for use with" list adds Lairs, Aeon Trespass: Odyssey, Dead of Winter, Legendary, The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship and Spirit Island. MayDay is careful about what that list means: its compatibility claims "only extend to the physical size of the cards in each respective game."
Publishers' own component lists are the cross-check, and Stonemaier Games prints card sizes in millimeters for its games. Its Expeditions page lists "123 uniquely illustrated/designed cards (63x88mm)", so Expeditions is a straight fit; count before you order, because one 50-sleeve Premium pack does not cover a deck that size.
Don't let the half millimeter confuse you. Stonemaier writes 63x88mm, MayDay writes 63.5 x 88 mm, and Dragon Shield's size guide calls the same card "63 x 88 mm (2½ x 3½ in)". All three are describing the same standard card, rounded differently by each company.
Games that need another size, or two sizes
A common mistake is assuming every board game card is the standard size. Two Stonemaier games show why:
- Wingspan. Stonemaier lists its "170 unique bird cards (57x87mm)", narrower than a 63.5 x 88 mm sleeve is cut for. MayDay's own page for its USA Chimera sleeve, sized 57.5x89mm, lists Wingspan among the games it fits, so that is the MayDay product for a Wingspan shelf.
- Viticulture. One box, two sizes. Stonemaier lists the vine, wine order and visitor cards at 44x67mm and the field, Automa and pink-and-blue cards at 63x88mm. A pack of MayDay 63.5x88 sleeves covers only the second group.
The rule that saves money: open the publisher's component list or measure one card before you buy sleeves for a game, and treat any listing that promises to fit most games as a guess. MayDay also points buyers to a longer game list and to its iOS app, Sleever, for checking sizes.
Clear or matte: MayDay versus Dragon Shield
Our other sleeve link is Dragon Shield's Matte sleeve in black. Dragon Shield's size guide puts its Standard Size at 63 x 88 mm and says it fits "Magic The Gathering, Pokémon, Flesh and Blood, Lorcana, and most western TCGs", and it pitches the line at players who "want premium shuffle feel with unmatched durability."
The difference that matters on a board game table is the back of the sleeve. A black-backed sleeve hides the card's printed back. In a trading card game that is the point, since every back should look identical. In a board game, card backs often tell you which deck a card belongs to or hint at what is on the other side, and an opaque sleeve takes that away at a glance. MayDay's clear sleeve leaves both sides visible.

If you hand-shuffle a big deck every game and its backs carry no information, the matte Dragon Shield is a reasonable choice; our premium versus budget sleeve guide explains what matte and extra thickness change in the hand. Check price on Amazon
Will the sleeved deck still fit the box?
Every sleeve adds size. MayDay gives the outside of this sleeve as 66 x 91 mm for a 63.5 x 88 mm card, and each sleeve adds thickness to the stack, so a deck that slid into a molded insert bare can stop fitting once it is sleeved. Before sleeving a whole game, sleeve ten cards and test them in the insert.
If the insert loses, our guide to storing games flat or on their side covers how sleeved decks change box space, and stackable trays are a common replacement for an insert that no longer closes. Check price on Amazon
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Buy it if the publisher's component list shows 63 x 88 or 63.5 x 88 mm cards, you want clear sleeves that keep card backs readable, and your table sees snacks. One reviewer on MayDay's own product page explains why they always buy the Premium level: the Standard "doesn't suit the way I play with my cards--which is often with lots of food at the table." Reviews hosted on a maker's own page are a friendly sample, so read it as one owner's reasoning rather than a survey.
Skip it if your game uses Wingspan-style cards or another non-standard size, if you want a matte finish and an opaque back for a trading card deck, or if the cards in question mostly lie face-up on the table and rarely get shuffled.

FAQ
Are MayDay 63.5x88mm sleeves the same size as standard card game sleeves?
Yes. MayDay cuts them for 63.5 x 88 mm cards, the standard card that Dragon Shield lists as 63 x 88 mm and Stonemaier writes as 63x88mm. Each company rounds the familiar 2½ by 3½ inch card a little differently.
How thick are MayDay Premium sleeves?
MayDay rates the Premium at 90 micron. Its 63.5 x 88 mm page gives no thickness for the Standard level, which comes 100 sleeves to a pack instead of 50.
Do MayDay 63.5x88mm sleeves fit Wingspan?
No. Stonemaier lists Wingspan's bird cards at 57x87mm, and MayDay points Wingspan owners to its USA Chimera sleeve, sized 57.5x89mm.
How many sleeves does a game need?
Count the cards at that size in the publisher's component list. Stonemaier's Expeditions has 123 cards at 63x88mm, while Viticulture mixes 63x88mm field, Automa and pink-and-blue cards with smaller 44x67mm decks.
Should board game cards go in clear or matte sleeves?
Clear sleeves like MayDay's keep artwork and card backs fully visible, which matters when the backs tell decks apart. Matte sleeves with colored backs, like Dragon Shield's black Matte, suit trading card decks whose backs are meant to look identical.
